Reusable or single-patient use: choosing the right model
Reusable and single-patient-use equipment each suit different operational contexts — the right model depends on utilisation, processing capacity and infection-prevention needs, not a blanket rule.
Neither model is automatically right
Reusable and single-patient-use patient-handling products can each offer practical benefits. Neither model should automatically be considered the best option for every department or healthcare setting.
The appropriate choice depends on how the product will be used and the systems required to support it.
When reusable equipment may fit
Reusable equipment may be appropriate where:
- the product will achieve regular, high utilisation
- validated cleaning or laundering processes are available
- turnaround times are reliable
- equipment can be tracked between use and processing
- loss and damage rates can be controlled
- sufficient fleet quantities are maintained
The purchase price should be considered alongside cleaning, transport, inspection, maintenance and eventual replacement.
When single-patient use may fit
Single-patient-use equipment may be appropriate where:
- equipment is allocated to one patient during their care episode
- isolation or infection-prevention requirements affect processing
- rapid availability is important
- central laundering is unavailable or impractical
- equipment loss disrupts reusable workflows
- decentralised care makes collection and return difficult
This model may simplify availability and turnaround, but material consumption, storage, stock management and disposal must also be considered.
Compare the complete pathway
A meaningful evaluation should include:
- clinical suitability
- patient throughput
- product utilisation
- cleaning and processing capacity
- infection-prevention requirements
- staff time
- transport and storage
- loss and damage
- product durability
- waste and end-of-life pathways
- total cost per patient or use
Environmental performance should not be inferred from the words "reusable" or "single use" alone. It depends on factors such as manufacturing, utilisation, cleaning, energy and water consumption, transport and disposal.
A mixed model may be appropriate
Different departments may require different approaches. A managed reusable fleet may suit one clinical area, while a single-patient-use model may be more practical in another.
The objective is to select the model that supports safe care, reliable availability and an efficient operational pathway in the intended environment.
