Match the patient-handling solution to the movement

Lateral transfer, turning, floor recovery and hoist transfer are different workflows with different demands — equipment selection should start from the task, not the product.

There is no single universal solution

There is no single product that is appropriate for every patient-handling activity.

Moving a patient laterally between two surfaces is fundamentally different from turning them in bed, recovering them from the floor or transferring them using a hoist. Each workflow involves different movements, forces, clinical objectives and environmental constraints.

Begin with the task, not the product

Before selecting equipment, define what needs to happen:

  • Is the patient being transferred, repositioned, turned or elevated?
  • Will they remain on the same surface?
  • Can the patient participate in the movement?
  • Is the activity planned or unplanned?
  • What space is available around the patient?
  • Are there imaging or procedural requirements?
  • What infection-prevention pathway applies?
  • How frequently will the equipment be required?

A product that works well for one task may add unnecessary steps or create new limitations in another.

Different workflows need different solutions

A connected patient-handling system may include solutions for:

Lateral transfer

Moving a patient between a bed, trolley, imaging table or procedural surface while minimising physical effort and friction.

Repositioning and bed boosting

Moving a patient within the bed to improve alignment, comfort or clinical access.

Controlled turning

Supporting side-lying, hygiene care, wound access and pressure-care workflows.

Floor or seated recovery

Raising a patient from the floor or a low position using an appropriate recovery process.

Hoist transfer

Selecting a sling and hoist configuration that is appropriate for the patient, attachment type and transfer objective.

Seated transfer

Supporting patients who retain sufficient mobility to participate in a surface-to-surface movement.

Design a system, not a collection of products

Effective patient handling depends on more than owning multiple devices. Each product must have a defined role, be available where the relevant task occurs and be supported by appropriate training and procedures.

The goal is not to find one universal device. It is to build a system in which the right solution is matched to the right movement.
