A high weight rating doesn't make a complete bariatric handling system — equipment also needs to suit the patient's dimensions, mobility and the full care pathway they move through.

Safe working load is an essential consideration when selecting equipment for bariatric-capable care.
However, a high weight rating alone does not create a complete bariatric patient-handling system. The equipment must also suit the patient's body dimensions, mobility, clinical condition and the environment in which care is delivered.
Look beyond the number
Two patients of the same weight may require very different handling plans.
Factors to consider include:
- body shape and weight distribution
- ability to assist with movement
- limb size and positioning
- skin integrity
- respiratory considerations
- pain and clinical condition
- available space
- the intended transfer or repositioning task
Equipment must provide suitable dimensions and support, not only sufficient load capacity.

Bariatric-capable planning should address more than one transfer device.
Facilities may need defined solutions for:
- lateral transfer
- repositioning and bed boosting
- controlled turning
- floor recovery
- hoist transfer
- seated transfer
- transport
- emergency or evacuation situations
The patient may move through several departments during an episode of care. Each area should be able to accommodate the patient safely and respectfully.
Protect dignity and consistency
Bariatric care should avoid improvised solutions and unnecessary delays while appropriate equipment is sourced.
A planned approach can support:
- greater privacy and dignity
- clearer staff responsibilities
- better equipment availability
- fewer last-minute workarounds
- more consistent handling processes
Bariatric-capable care is therefore not defined by the highest safe working load in the equipment catalogue. It requires a coordinated system that considers the patient, task, environment and complete care pathway.
